Strawberry picking is easy and fun!

"Our luscious berries are just waiting for you to pick , so plan to come back often... but remember, the season lasts only three to four weeks!"

What to Bring

It's a great idea to plan ahead with this list.  Nothing is 'required' but take advantage of the Hazeltines' tips after their years of experience in the fields.

  • Your Hazeltines' 4-quart basket used from your previous visit.  (You will receive a 25-cent discount when you re-use your box on your next visit!)

  • Appropriate clothes and shoes.  You will literally be in a field on a hot summer day!  If you come in the morning when the dew is still heavy, you may wish to bring a pair of dry shoes to wear afterward.

  • Sunscreen.  You may want to wear sunscreen as the June sun is strong even in the morning hours.

  • Drinking water.  You will want to have a refreshing drink to cool you down after your 'hard work' in the heat and sun.

  • Wet wipes or wet cloth to wash berry-stained hands.

Picking Tips

  • Look under the leaves of the plant for berries; pinch or pull stem from plant.  Be sure to leave the stem on each berry.

  • Pick all fully ripe berries in your assigned row.  All red berries, both large and small, are ripe and ready-to-eat.

  • Green berries will not ripen after picking.

  • Enjoy yourself!

Getting 'Em Home

  • Handle the berries gently as strawberries are fragile and perishable.

  • Protect the berries from the sun and heat, including in your car.

  • Take your berries straight home; do not leave them in a hot car.

Storing Your Strawberries

  • Before storing or processing, sort berries; use the ripest ones first.

  • Refrigerate berries in loosely covered containers.  Ideal temperatures are just above freezing, 34-38 degrees.

  • Don’t wash the berries until they are ready to be used.

  • Use as soon as possible.

Freezing Berries

All berries can be prepared with or without sugar or syrup; be chopped, sliced, mashed or pureed. For freezing they should be packed in an air tight container, leaving 1-inch of head space. They are best if used within one year..
