Eat More Fruits & Vegetables: 5 A Day For Better Health**

Did you know... that eating 5 fruits & vegetables a day is one of the most important choices you can make to help maintain your health?

Leading health authorities agree increasing fruits and vegetables in the diet is essential for better health!  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Academy of Sciences all recommend that: Americans should eat a balanced diet low in fat which includes lots of fruits and vegetables.

  • Fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of cancer!  35% of all cancer deaths may be related to what we eat-- a diet high in fat and low in fiber.  Fruits and vegetables help reduce your risk of cancer because they are low in fat and are rich sources of vitamin !, vitamin C, and fiber.  A low-fat diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol an includes plenty of high fiber food s also decreases the risk of heart diseases.
  • Eat  5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day!  Leading health authorities recommend that you eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day along with a variety of foods.  One serving is 1/2 cup of fruit, 3/4 cup juice, 1/2 cup cooked vegetable, 1 cup leafy vegetable, or 1/4 cup dried fruit.
  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables!  All fruits and vegetables are good for you, however, be sure to include every day those that are high in vitamin A, vitamin C, and fiber.  You should also have several servings of vegetables a week from the cabbage family (cruciferous vegetables).  Vitamin supplements do not provide the same health benefits as eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Additional Health Benefits.  Fruits and vegetables with out added fats have no cholesterol and almost all are naturally low in calories, fat and sodium.  Some are good sources of other nutrients such as folacin, potassium, and calcium.  Fruits and vegetables also help promote a healthy digestive tract.
